Baaaaaaaaaasically, i've been teaching saxophone for the last few years to about 20ish students. I was bartending at the same time but it finally got to a point where it seemed like I'd be able to quit bartending and just live off of my teaching job. I was a bit wrong, because while my teaching job does pay incredibly well, I don't get paid if a student doesn't show up... which started happening pretty frequently. Once flu season came around and everyone was sick, I was getting 4+ cancellations per week, which really digs into my income. And if there was a test that week at the school I teach at, students would be calling off and whatnot.dang tell us more about the aviation arc

At Thanksgiving last year, my uncle, who was a naval jet pilot for 20ish years was talking to me about aviation - I was playing a lot of MSFS, nerding out about aviation with him, and he asked if I was interested in flying real planes... I said that I figured I'd get a pilot's license at some point in my life, it has always been a thought in my head, but at that time, it wasn't realistic... to which he said, "no, as a job." From there he made me think a lot about it, I did a lot of research into schools, requirements of getting a major aviation job, etc., and I have now been enrolled in flight school for about a month.
It's a very new venture, but so far I'm fucking loving it. I love music, and I'm not turning my back on it, I just want to do something that is going to take care of me that I love at least as much as music

God damn I may need to reach out to you in 2 - 5 years. Just graduated college and start my new software engineering job in August, but end goal has always been to be an airline pilot. I kept renewing my 1st class medical after a year and a half of fighting with the FAA due to an ADHD diagnosis. Finally got the special issuance 1st class medical, only to realize that flight training would be too expensive during college. Stopped renewing it and it sits idle, though I basically have to start flight training by 2026 because the one special issuance stipulation is to get a note from a flight instructor stating my abilities as a pilot. Yeah it is definitely expensive... I took out a $73,000 loan to pay for this, but my thought is that if I can even get a job with like Ameriflight who start at $70,000 a year, I'd be able to pay it off relatively fast.God damn I may need to reach out to you in 2 - 5 years. It's awesome to hear you got into aviation. It's a bug that once it bites you, you're infected with life. 60k - 100k in training isn't an easy pill to swallow, in fact its probably the hardest pill to ever swallow since educational loans don't apply, only private loans, but if you grind for 2 years and get 1,500 hours, wholly-owned regionals (at least AA WO) are now making around $80/hr to $95/hr for 1st-year FO. Beside the pay, tell me whats better than flying 30,000 feet in the air at ~mach 0.8 with those epaulettes on your shoulder. It's damn worth it and if I make it, I hope to sit in the right seat while you're in the left seat. Keep the blue side up man!
