Hello gamers and enemies.

Are you a fan of Pokemon? Do you want points so you can buy the playergeist upgrade you've desperately been saving for? Look no further. I will be hosting a Pokemon tournament on Pokemon Showdown, and you should participate.

You will be competing for 80,000 of the finest, most incredible points from myself, @Siddo, and @Etch-A-Sketch. This will be broken up as follows:
  • 1st place: 30,000 points
  • 2nd place: 20,000 points
  • 3rd place: 15,000 points
  • 4th place: 10,000 points
  • 5th place 5,000 points

This breakdown may be subject to change depending on the number of participants, but it will be a total of a 80,000 point prize pool.

The format is as of yet undecided! Please comment below what format you are interested in playing. It does not need to be one listed here. Here are the current considerations:
  • Gen 6 OU (Kalos, Mega evolutions)
  • Gen 8 OU (Galar/Hisui, Gmax)
  • Gen 9 OU (Paldea, Terra)
  • VGC 2025 Reg I
  • SV Almost Any Ability
  • SV Monotype
I am not interested in random battles for this tournament because I like seeing what teams people bring, but if there's interest in that we can host another in the future.

How do you enter? Just rate this post optimistic and comment your showdown username below. Also comment what format(s) you'd like to play.

The tournament will be hosted in a hybrid asynchronus format. I will close entries in three days on Saturday July 26 at 11:59 PM PST (this may be earlier or later depending on turnout). Then I will release a tournament bracket. For each match, the players involved will need to schedule a time to battle each other, and communicate the time to me in advance, so I can share it with anyone interested in spectating. Preferably, each match will be conducted in discord VC and streamed so everyone can participate. I will do my best to work around your schedules.

Note: I will be participating, but I will not be eligible for any prize(s).

This post will be updated with details as they are finalized. Good luck all.

I won't play but I love this idea.
However, winner takes all is stimky. Can I throw 30k of mine on the pile specifically for
2nd place: 20k
3rd place: 10k

I'll just give 'em to you to distribute to the winners if so.

Aranei

i like gen 9 nat dex ubers or gen 8 anything goes; but will play any gen ou

i wont take any winnings, if i happen to win ill just drop the winnings to the next place. i just like playing pokemon :)
in fact if anyone beats me (even outside of the tournament) ill personally give you either 1 month of the monthly rank or the highest perma rank. (subject to change if for some reason the ranks are like $500)

Despite the name, I've never played Pokemon competitively and know nothing of it, which is why I want to do this even more.

  • Gen 6 OU (Kalos, Mega evolutions)
  • Gen 8 OU (Galar/Hisui, Gmax)
  • Gen 9 OU (Paldea, Terra)
  • VGC 2025 Reg I
  • SV Almost Any Ability
  • SV Monotype
I have no clue what any of this means. But I'm sure I can be taught to know what they mean

P.S. How competitive would a team of 6 Espurr be (I know the answer is not really)

Unfortunately most of these formats restrict you from using more than one of the same pokemon.

The list is of different formats that we could possibly play. Gen 6/8/9 refers to specific sets of games, and will determine what pokemon are available to use among a few other things. OU, VGC, Almost Any Ability, Anything Goes, and Monotype are all formats that determine what rules you need to follow when building your team. OU restricts you from using the most powerful pokemon in an attempt to create a more diverse meta. Almost Any Ability lets you use illegal combinations of abilities and pokemon (not a very beginner friendly format), Anything Goes bans nothing (almost nothing?), and monotype is OU with the added restriction that all your pokemon need to share a common type.

Sometime soon I will add to this post with some helpful resources for guides on the format, team building, and tips for using showdown.

I'm in, my vote goes to Gen 9 OU, preferably doubles. Doubles has a much deeper set of available strategies and interactions than singles. In single battles, the game often comes down to whomever can setup with moves like DD, Shell Smash, or other boosting moves, followed by a boring sweep.

I will join to be cannon fodder

Not sure about formats

Thanks to everyone who signed up! Signups are now closed. I will be finalizing some details now. If anyone is still interested in joining, message me on discord before I make the next post on this thread and I'll see if I can work you in. Lets vote on the format now. Based on suggestions from all of you, I've narrowed it down to three choices:

Gen 6 OU Singles: Only pokemon you can obtain in or transfer to Pokemon X & Y, single battles, mega evolutions, the strongest pokemon available are banned.
Gen 8 Anything Goes Singles: You may use any pokemon that can be obtained in or transferred to Pokemon Sword & Shield, and all strategies are allowed with the exception of endless battles. (Endless Battle Clause: Players cannot intentionally prevent their opponent's Pokémon from fainting from PP depletion and Struggle recoil.) Dynamax is also in play, but no mega evolutions or Z moves.
Gen 9 OU Doubles: Only pokemon you can obtain in or transfer to Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, No mega evolutions, dynamaxing, or Z moves, but terastalization is allowed, double battles, and the strongest pokemon available are banned.

If you would like to vote for Gen 6 OU, rate this post bad spelling.
If you would like to vote for Gen 8 AG, rate this post confusing.
If you would like to vote for Gen 9 OU Doubles, rate this post creative.
If you would like to abstain from voting, rate this post disagree.

I'll give everyone until Monday at 11:59 PST to vote, or close voting early once everyone has voted or one option has enough of a majority. The next post here will include the tournament bracket and some resources for team building and generally using Showdown. From there you'll have some time to build your teams while I coordinate with everyone to arrange times for matches. Thank you to everyone for participating, and thank you to @Siddo and @Etch-A-Sketch for your contributions to the prize pool! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about the tournament or about Showdown.

Hello again everyone!

The vote is over and the format will be Gen 6 OU Singles. Additionally, the tournament bracket is now finalized. This will be hosted in two parts:

Stage one will be a round robin tournament in two groups of five. You will battle against the four other players in your bracket once, earning a point for each win.

In stage two, the highest scoring player from each group will battle each other to determine first and second place, along with the second highest scoring player from each group battling each other for third and fourth place, and so on all the way down. This round will be best two out of three.

You are free to switch/modify teams at any point during the tournament, including between games in your stage two best two out of three match. Here is the bracket:

Stage 1:
Group A

@Mini
@RhazhBash (taking over for @rog the dog) 3-0
@SirLemoncakes 2-1
@Bird (CCBromia) 0-3
@Virunas (Virunas) 1-2
Group B

@pokeben (Pokeben10) 0-2
@GimcSnooper 0-3
@pigeon (ClubPigeon) 3-1
@Espurr 1-2
@Weiss (Aranei) 4-0
You will have one week to play your match against each player in your group. (Send me the results of your matches by Tuesday August 5th, 11:59 PM PST) Please reach out to me if you need more time than this. I encourage you to schedule the matches ahead of time and announce them or let me know so everyone can spectate, but impromptu matches are acceptable. In order for a match to be counted, you must send me a link to the replay.

Please reach out to the other players in your group either here or in discord to schedule a time to battle. Good luck everyone!

Here are some resources to use for your teambuilding and for playing on Showdown:

Rate My Team - Players post their teams to be rated, and other players will discuss them. This is a great spot to see examples of teams and discussions about their strengths and weaknesses. Feel free to steal an entire team, steal a pokemon, or just get ideas from here.

Sample Teams - This is a guide made by experienced players with well built examples teams of different archetypes. Feel free to steal these too.

Viability Rankings - This is a guide on the viability of various pokemon in the format. This is a great starting point to pick out a strong pokemon to anchor your team.

Gen 6 OU Overview - This contains the full list of banned pokemon/items/strategies/moves, and allows you to search for common strategies for specific pokemon. If you want to use a specific pokemon but aren't sure how to build it, it may have a popular strategy here you can copy or pull inspiration from.

General Teambuilding Guide - This is a comprehensive guide on general team building principles. This is much wordier, but has a ton of very useful information. It also links a lot of other resources.

Chat Commands List - This is a list of chat commands you can use either during team building or in a game. If you're struggling to remember what something is weak to, or want to know if a certain pokemon can learn a certain move, you can use these commands on the spot to check.

Marriland Team Builder - This allows you to input six pokemon and see at a glance what types your team is defensively weak or strong against. This will help you build balanced teams.

Me, Pigeon - Feel free to ask me any questions you have. If you want my opinion or help building a team, or want to play a practice game against me, just reach out and I'll be happy to help.

To use the teambuilder:
  1. Log in to Showdown
  2. Click Teambuilder
  3. Click New Team
  4. Under format select "[Gen 6] OU" from the right side
  5. Build your team
  6. Return to the view of your team
  7. Click Validate
